NOTE: With the economy as it is, the HBD is struggling to
meet its meager operating expenses of approximately $3500
per year. If less than half of those currently directly
subscribed to the HBD sent in a mere $5.00, the HBD would
be able to easily meet its annual expenses, with room to
spare for next year. Please consider it.

Financial Projection as of 16 August 2012

Subject: Oops! And an update.

Greetings, Beerlings! Take me to your lager...

I have been working on server security, and doing a few system tweaks in my
"spare time". It was the latter that caused a premature triggering of
Digest #5944, but I'm thinking that the former may have caused Digests
5941-5943 to be generated, but not emailed - I had to rebuild the entire
mail system to fix some security issues. In any case, since I actually
received the blank issue, I'm pretty sure that the Digest is now being sent
properly. (For those scratching their heads, I decremented the issue
counter and removed the blank issue from the archive and the HTML HBD
collection. That's why this issue and the blank one have the same issue
number.)

If those receiving this could pop me a note (email me - please don't reply
to the Digest) as to whether or not you received Digests 5941-5943, you
will go miles in helping me determine if it was a "me" problem or a server
problem. And, if the majority tell me it was the latter, the server is now
equipped to re-mail those issues (one of those system tweaks), so I'll make
sure that they do get out.

In other news, we should have some response from the IRS in October, per
their timing, regarding our 501(c)3 status. I've also been s-l-o-w-l-y
trialing a new server based on Ubuntu linux and postfix to replace out
current digs. It will probably be a two-stage process, though - the HBD is
currently on the newest and best of our servers; however, I cannot update
what we have on this box without taking the HBD offline. Once I have a
working system based on the new kernel and postfix server, I'll synchronize
it with the existing box, then switch our IP over to it. ...And then repeat
the process on this box, and transfer our IP again. There are easier
methods - just not on our budget. Also, the "second newest", biggest server
has succumbed to its age and has recently had to be decommissioned. The
hardware has been failing bit by bit. Most of the failures hadn't been
"mission critical", and it was plodding along happily, when the fans in the
power supply failed, and that was all she wrote. To tun it any longer would
have fried it, so I moved all content to the other servers, and I will go
through it at the component level to see whether its worth it to piece it
back together this winter. (That box was one of my favorite. Sigh...)

And, as always, a heartfelt "thank you" to those who have sent a few bucks
to the Digest to help keep it afloat.
