Subject: Shelf Life of Grain

What is the typical shelf life of uncrushed grain? I recently uncovered
some base malt that had been double-bagged and stored in a sealed container
at basement temperatures. It must be at least four or five years old. I
also have some odd-lots of specialty grains in my beer fridge (42 deg F) I
have accumulated, and was doing some spring (late summer, actually) cleaning
and was surprised to find that I had dated them back in 2004. They are also
in sealed containers. They are always there, and I just didn't realize how
quickly time flies when you're not paying attention. I'm not worried about
the economic loss, which would be minimal, I just don't want to spend an
entire brew day using this stuff, only to find out at first tasting that I
had used crap grain. But, on the other hand, if there's nothing wrong with
it . . .



I've always tried to not keep any grains longer than two years, and this is
not usually a problem. Just curious if anyone has used "seasoned" grains
and had a bad (or inconsequential) experience. I had been wondering where
that bag of grain went.



Moral of the story: If you lose a 40-lb. bag of grain in your basement,
it's probably past time you take a hard look at clearing out some junk from
your house.
