Folks- thanks for your support! For the first time in recent memory, the
HBD is absolutely financially green and healthy, with finances enough to
carry us some time into 2012. We will also be pursuing an official IRS
letter of recognition to aid in both obtaining institutional funds in the
future, and obtaining services and materials at "charitable" discounts.
Finally, through this episode, a hosting facility that offers the
root-level access the HBD requires at an exceedingly reasonable rate has
been made known. We are currently analysing our bandwidth requirements
and, assuming we fit within their model, will begin investigating the
porting of the HBD and all of its facilities to the OS used by the host.
Assuming all is containable, feasible, and functional afterward, the HBD
funding issue should be pretty much resolved for all time. Stay tuned...

Greetings, Beerlings! Take me to your lager...

Thank you to all who have donated in order to help the HBD through
this difficult period. It heartens me to know that the old beast is
still of value to more than just me - even if that value is sometimes
only sentimental.

Within the email generated by the most recent plea for funds was at
least one offer of support from a foundation of sorts. As with most
corporations and trusts, though, they need the HBD to have an IRS
Letter of Exemption in order to be able to donate to us. We've skirted
the Letter requirement by being registered as a NFP in Michigan, and
by not raising more than 5K (usually significantly less than 5K), on
average, per year as outlined in IRS publication 557.

This most recent situation we find the HBD in, plus some of the
discussion it has generated tells me that maybe having that letter of
exepmtion is not such a bad idea. However, though, I've "started" to
do this several times, obtaining one is a bit outside my scope of
experience and available time. Therefor, I ask if there is anyone
reading the HBD who might be experienced in obtaining an IRS Letter Of
Exemption willing to do a bit of "pro bono publico" on behalf of the
HBD? Let me know!

Subject: Diacetyl

There should be no trouble telling diacetyl (2,3 butane dione) from
honey. It is 2,3 pentane dione that suggest honey. If you were to use
pure diacetyl there is should be no confusion in anyone's mind as to
whether it resembles honey or not. Of course 2,3 pentane dione and 2,3
butane dione often come together (that's not why they are called the
vicinal diketones though - it's because the carboxyl groups are on
adjacent carbons).

Now a greater problem is that butter replacements do not, AFAIK,
contain diacetyl any more. First there were people working in the
"buttered" popcorn factories claiming that they were getting cancer
from exposure to diacetyl and finally some whacko who ate 40 bags of
microwave popcorn a day (or some equally ridiculous number) got cancer
and filed a lawsuit claiming it was the diacetyl that did it. This was
the death knell for diacetyl in modern food products. You may have
noticed that movie theatre lobbies no longer reek of it.

So I think if you want to do this you will have to find some real
diacetyl. Look around on the net and you may find someone willing to
sell it to you but you may have to answer some questions. Another
source would be the FlavorActiv kits which would let you learn about a
lot of other substances as well. They are pretty expensive though.

To bring some consistency to the judging of competition beers with
regards to diacetyl I am preparing a workshop specific to diacetyl.

Dosing beer with butter extract gradually increasing to determin one's
threshold level is one step.
Testing with a heated sample vs control is another .

How do you differentiate diacetyl notes from honey and hop notes?
Are there suggestions from the collective that I can incorporate in this
endeavor?

Good beer is no accidents but accidents can happen.

William,

Among other places, you can find a discussion of
olive oil from some of the HBD stalwarts at around
HBD 5311 or so.

Note that many of the experiments with olive oil in
brewing are terminally flawed from a real science
perspective. Hence, you'll be hard pressed to find
real, scientifically-sound information on it beyond
the very enlightening musings of Steve Alexander and
others on HBD. Or you can opt for the entertaining
but much lighter (and often unscientific) chatter
on many other boards. I don't think ANYBODY has done
a proper scientific study on the topic, but Steve's
reasoning might explain why.

Don't forget that you can do Google searches within
HBD's archive on any topic you choose. Example:

Google: "site:hbd.org/hbd/archive olive oil"

Indeed! The digest may appear to be moribund with the low
level of activity lately, but the signal-to-noise ratio
is always excellent. Best of all, there is a huge amount
of wisdom held within the HBD site, and it's better quality
for sure than most of the talkboard clutter in other places.

I find HBD to be one of my favorite sites to search
if I want REAL information instead of chatter.

Subject: competition announcement - 16th annual South Shore Brewoff

Hi All,

This email is the announcement of the 16th annual South Shore Brewoff
hosted by the South Shore Brew Club. This year's Brewoff will be held
on Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 in Mansfield, MA. The entry deadline is
March 25th, 2011.

Entries will be accepted in all 28 BJCP style categories, per the
2008 BJCP style guidelines.

I have agreed to research and informally present to my local club
information around using
Olive Oil in brewing. I remember seeing an article a while back in
either Zymurgy or BYO
but finding my specific magazine may be a bit difficult. If anyone
has any information, links,
articles, or personal experiences that they would like to share, it
will really help me out.
I appreciate any and all thoughts!

Subject: 2011 BJCP Board of Directors Nominations and Elections

This year four of the seven BJCP Board of Directors positions are up for
election. For 2011 those regions are:

Mid-Atlantic Region
Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia

West Region
California, Hawaii

Midwest Region
Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee

South Region
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North
Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas

Potential candidates will need to be nominated (by themselves or others)
and have 5 endorsements. Nominations are now being accepted through
March 31. The details can be found here:

Nomination Process

Send an email to the Election Committee. Candidates may nominate
themselves, or may be nominated by others. If nominated by others, the
candidate must accept the nomination. All nominated candidates must
receive five endorsements to be placed on the ballot. These endorsements
are also sent to the same email address, as are any questions about the
election process.

Candidacy Requirements

Candidates for the office of regional representative must meet the
following requirements:

* Candidates must live in the region they represent at the time of
the election.
* Candidates must be an Active member of the BJCP.
* Candidates must hold the rank of Certified or higher.
* Candidates must receive the endorsements (simple email
acknowledgment) from five other Active judges who reside in the same
region by the Nominations Closed date.
* Candidates must supply a candidate statement and photo for the
web site by the Candidate Statements Due date.
