Subject: "BioBeer," Synthetic Biology, Genetic Engineering

Been listening to the synthetic biology debate between Jim Thomas and
Drew Endy on Stewart Brand's Seminar About Longterm Thinking (part of
the Long Now foundation).
http://is.gd/9RRQ
(Shortened because of HBD constraints.)
Several comments made had to do with brewer's yeast. In fact, some
comments were made, half-jokingly, about beer and one company (haven't
found the right spelling, sounds like "Amarys") is in fact producing
beer. Not to mention that Rice University apparently had a "biobeer"
program with St. Arnold's yeast.

A while ago, we had a discussion about GM yeast. My understanding of
the detailed differences between genetic engineering and synthetic
biology is rather limited but it sounds like discussing synthetic
brewing yeast might be an interesting approach to learn more about the
subject. The scientific literature requires background knowledge and
the media coverage seems inadequate to me.

Does anyone have any insight on the topic?

Cheers!
