Mike,

I used to do the same thing. But no need to keep the water at 167F for the
time it takes to mash. Just heat the water to a higher temperature and let
it fall to the desired temperature over that time it will be in the cooler.
And 167 isn't the right temperature anyway. You need to take temperature
losses into account. So heat to ~180oF and you'll have water at about 170F
+/- going onto the top of your mash tun.

Mike,

I use a commercial bucket heater to heat sparge water, keep recirculating
PBW hot, and make sodapop right in a corny keg. It did not come with a
controllable thermostat, though, so I made a thermowell to hold the probe
from a Ranco temp controller. Works a treat. Picture are here:
